Show notes http://industryangel.com/110-how-to-win-at-office-politics/

In any office there’s always a hierarchy of power plays in how to get things done. Corporate veteran, Davide Cervellin, discusses with Ian Farrar how to play the game in his new book ‘Office of Cards’:

1. The corporate environment is like an episode of Game of Thrones – despite all the rules and red-tape it can be unpredictable so make sure you’re prepared for every outcome
2. Networking is the key to success – personal connections help you get things done so build a network that can make you uniquely effective in your environment
3. Lose the whiners – if you choose to spend time with people who drag you down, they WILL drag you down. Seek people who think and act like you – be a radiator and not a drain
4. Play the Long Game – getting what you want or need from the business world takes planning, time and hard work. Make sure every move you make gets you one step closer to your goal, no matter how long it takes
5. Always have a positive attitude and stay cool – it instils calm and inspires loyalty. Anger and frustration lose you good friends, lead you to make mistakes and miss opportunities
6. Never argue – there is absolutely nothing to gain from making an enemy for the sake of winning an argument because that enemy could become a problem
7. Make no enemies – enemies kill ideas and careers. Even if you think that person is powerless you don’t want them as an enemy, to survive and thrive you need to make sure that you #makenoenemies
8. Make people feel valued and important – they’re far more likely to support you and respond to your suggestions
9. Learn how to listen to people – your attention should be on what they’re saying when they’re speaking, not your response. By listening to people and giving them a chance to speak you’re gathering information you can use to tailor your idea to tie in with what they’ve got in mind
10. Be prepared – when you need something from someone make it as easy as possible for them to give it to you by doing the research and thinking needed before you ask anything

Davide Cervellin was nominated as one of the Top 100 Influential People in Data Driven Businesses in 2018. He now works for travel website Booking.com.

Born on the 22nd of January 1991 Mugzy had to fight through his adolescent years. Struggling with deep internal stress, he found inspiration in Eminem after his first encounter with Hip-Hop when he heard the song 'The Way I Am'. Mugzy felt that he could strongly relate to the lyrics in Eminem's songs & began to change his image to be a true representative of the Hip-Hop culture.

As he developed his style and studied Hip-Hop, he found further inspiration from the legends: 2 Pac, Biggie, 50 Cent, DMX, & searched further into the roots of Hip-Hop to re-discover artists like Public Enemy, NWA & Nas.

Drawing inspiration from the masters of Hip-Hop & armed with the knowledge earned through years of hardship, Mugzy's rap speaks of truth. A raw truth. A truth that will resound with teenagers that have had to endure self doubt & lack of confidence.

Mugzy emerged from the shadow through Hip-Hop & found a way to express himself through his music by embracing the culture.

Mugzy's style is a blend of grit, raw lyrics, aggression and abrasiveness. Mugzy will tell it how it is.

Based north of Sydney, Mugzy will not shy away from any challenge to perform on any stage.

Our Company

CareCallingNow is a family owned company with the Vision of keeping people in their own homes longer, where they are most comfortable. We help busy people with vulnerable family members who want to continue to live independently to know for certain that they are OK. With a special emphasis on pro-active automated call programs, because checking in on you family should be easy and not a burden.
CareCallingNow was created after a member of our own family had mini stroke and was on the floor alone for 2 days with her medical alert bracelet in the other room.

Our Story – Ian & Irene

Ian’s mum Maisie lived in her own home, long after her husband Bill had passed, until she was about 86 years old.

His mum had a history of falls and we thought we would get her one of those medical alert necklaces, so that if she fell, when no one was around she would not be at risk of lying on the floor for days.
We were young, busy with our own lives and young family and lived 1000 miles away. We had the best of intentions but realistically we were never going to make the effort to call her every day, even though we knew we should.
This, however, was not the only issue we had… we didn’t realize at the time, that she didn’t always wear it that it was on her bedside table, or in kitchen instead of around her neck!!!
One day she had a mini stroke in the bathroom, and did fall and even though she was not wearing the necklace, she would not have been able to push the button as she was “paralysed.”
She was there for about 40 hours before she was found.
How bad did we feel???
How good would it have been if CareCallingNow had been around then!!!
It was after that we realised she could no longer stay in her own home safely anymore. It broke our hearts when the day came that she left her home of close to 30 years.
Ian said he felt like we were sending her to jail… you couldn’t even say “without the bars” as her windows did actually have bars on them.
The only difference was she was free to come and go and people “cared” about her.
What choice did we have???
She couldn’t really live with us!!!
We didn’t know “how to take care of her” even if she had wanted to come.
Every so often you hear of those horror stories of people being found dead, in their home, years after they died because no one noticed.
Of course, these are extremes and I am in no way suggesting that your relationship with your Mom is such that something like this would happen.
However in talking to other people whose elderly loved one has died at home alone, after a fall or accident, 4 DAYS is not uncommon for them to wait…these falls do not all end in death but hospitalisation for severe dehydration is the very least that you can expect.

After meteoric success in academia, Danusia quickly became an Economic and Social Research Council Fellow and rose to a senior level as an Organizational Behaviour and Development expert. As an international career academic, she became a leadership model theoretician publishing countless articles in top refereed business journals.

After leaving the world of academia as a tenured academic, her strong sense of purpose propelled her into becoming the reigning authority on C-level execs and Boards. Through her C-suite consulting Danusia influences the way Boards strategise, redirects company vision, reignites C-suiters influence and re-aligns their leadership prowess. Her clients include Microsoft, Mars, Sainsbury's, ICBC Standard Bank, Ministry of Defence, Coca-Cola, Deloitte, Isle of Man Government, The Home Office, as well as various industry associations.

She has chaired an Oxford Union debate with Germaine Greer and Helena Morrissey on 'Can you Have it All?' and is a regular contributor on future C-level business changes/trends, cultivating women's leadership and the age old debate about women's careers and family. As well as being an authority on all things “C-suite” she is also mother of ten including 'her last baby', triplets of four years old.

Three decades of experience as an ambitious mother in male dominated industries compelled her to create the online platform Unstoppable Mothers (launching August 2017). Unstoppable Mothers is a social change movement for ambitious and accomplished women navigating their journey of career success and happy children. Her forthcoming book, UNSTOPPABLE (2018) equips working mothers with skills and strategies of Unstoppability to counter the impacts of, what Danusia calls, the MotherStopper culture.

Connor Gillivan is a 27 year old serial entrepreneur and an expert in eCommerce and online hiring. He co-founded his first eCommerce company out of his dorm room in 2009 and scaled it to sell over $20 million on the Amazon Marketplace. While scaling, he and his co-founders started outsourcing operations and became experts at hiring online.

In 2015, Connor co-founded and became the CMO of FreeeUp, an online hiring marketplace specialized for the eCommerce and digital marketing industries. He and his co-founder wanted a better way to hire reliable remote workers without having to spend hours upfront recruiting and interviewing. Today, FreeeUp serves over 2,000 online businesses and is rapidly becoming a favorite destination to hire online.

Connor is a best selling author with his book titled Free Up Your Business: 50 Secrets to Bootstrap Million Dollar Companies. The book shares secrets that he and his business partner have developed over the 7 years of working together and outlines how entrepreneurs can scale their business to over $1 million.

Finally, Connor owns his own blog, ConnorGillivan.com, where he writes about starting eCommerce businesses, growing as an entrepreneur, and navigating the startup world.
