Episode 033 - Matthew Turner
The Successful Mistake

Can you imagine what your life would be like if you could transform each mistake you make into a giant success?

Consider what this would do for your bank account, family life, and business?

This isn’t fantasy. This is what the world’s most successful people do each day, but they don’t have a superpower that you’ll never have. What they do is quite simple, although it may go against what you’ve been taught your entire life.

Well, my friend Matthew Turner knows all about this because he’s spent the last four years interviewing 163 of the world’s most successful people about how they transform failure into success. He’s uncovered a seven stage process everyone goes through after they make a mistake, although more importantly… what the best do differently to the rest.

He shares all these secrets and more in his latest book (The Successful Mistake), and I have a free copy to offer you. But before we get to that, I’d like to introduce you to Matthew and why he decided to write The Successful Mistake in the first place.

Four years ago, he left his job to fulfil his dream of working for himself, and like most new entrepreneurs he made a lot of mistakes. He failed. He took one step forward followed by two steps back. Fed up, he set out on a journey to interview every successful business owner he could find to learn how they overcome mistakes, failure, and adversity.

After interviewing 163 of the world’s finest minds -- including the likes of Chris Brogan, Pam Slim, Neil Patel & Dan Miller -- he wrote The Successful Mistake because it was a book he needed to read. It’s a book most people need to read, and I wish I could have read it when I first started my business!

This is why I’m excited to introduce you to him today, because he’s giving you the chance to grab a Free Paperback Copy of The Book, and I think you would be crazy to not take him up on this offer. He’s poured four years of interviews and research into this book, so if you want to:

Discover What The Seven Stages Are...
Transform Even Your Biggest Failures Into HUGE Success Stories...
Learn From 163 of The World’s Most Inspiring Minds…

Then I encourage you to grab your free paperback copy of The Successful Mistake:

Episode 030 - Antonio García Martinez
Chaos Monkeys: Inside the Silicon Valley Money Machine

Imagine a chimpanzee rampaging through a datacenter powering everything from Google to Facebook. Infrastructure engineers use a software version of this “chaos monkey” to test online services’ robustness—their ability to survive random failure and correct mistakes before they actually occur. Tech entrepreneurs are society’s chaos monkeys, disruptors testing and transforming every aspect of our lives, from transportation (Uber) and lodging (AirBnB) to television (Netflix) and dating (Tinder). One of Silicon Valley’s most audacious chaos monkeys is Antonio García Martínez.

After stints on Wall Street and as CEO of his own startup, García Martínez joined Facebook’s nascent advertising team, turning its users’ data into profit for COO Sheryl Sandberg and chairman and CEO Mark “Zuck” Zuckerberg. Forced out in the wake of an internal product war over the future of the company’s monetization strategy, García Martínez eventually landed at rival Twitter. He also fathered two children with a woman he barely knew, committed lewd acts and brewed illegal beer on the Facebook campus (accidentally flooding Zuckerberg’s desk), lived on a sailboat, raced sport cars on the 101, and enthusiastically pursued the life of an overpaid Silicon Valley wastrel.

Now, this gleeful contrarian unravels the chaotic evolution of social media and online marketing and reveals how it is invading our lives and shaping our future. Weighing in on everything from startups and credit derivatives to Big Brother and data tracking, social media monetization and digital “privacy,” García Martínez shares his scathing observations and outrageous antics, taking us on a humorous, subversive tour of the fascinatingly insular tech industry. Chaos Monkeys lays bare the hijinks, trade secrets, and power plays of the visionaries, grunts, sociopaths, opportunists, accidental tourists, and money cowboys who are revolutionizing our world. The question is, will we survive?

Ian Farrar and Antonio García Martinez Discuss:-

  • Life as a Facebook employee

Geoffrey Moore is an author, speaker, and advisor who splits his consulting time between start-up companies in the Mohr Davidow portfolio and established high-tech enterprises, most recently including Salesforce, Microsoft, Intel, Box, Aruba, Cognizant, and Rackspace.

Moore’s life’s work has focused on the market dynamics surrounding disruptive innovations. His first book, Crossing the Chasm, focuses on the challenges start-up companies face transitioning from early adopting to mainstream customers. It has sold more than a million copies, and its third edition has been revised such that the majority of its examples and case studies reference companies come to prominence from the past decade. Moore’s most recent work, Escape Velocity, addresses the challenge large enterprises face when they seek to add a new line of business to their established portfolio. It has been the basis of much of his recent consulting.

Irish by heritage, Moore has yet to meet a microphone he didn’t like and gives between 50 and 80 speeches a year. One theme that has received a lot of attention recently is the transition in enterprise IT investment focus from Systems of Record to Systems of Engagement. This is driving the deployment of a new cloud infrastructure to complement the legacy client-server stack, creating massive markets for a next generation of tech industry leaders.

Moore has a bachelors in American literature from Stanford University and a PhD in English literature from the University of Washington. After teaching English for four years at Olivet College, he came back to the Bay Area with his wife and family and began a career in high tech as a training specialist. Over time he transitioned first into sales and then into marketing, finally finding his niche in marketing consulting, working first at Regis McKenna Inc, then with the three firms he helped found: The Chasm Group, Chasm Institute, and TCG Advisors. Today he is chairman emeritus of all three.

Ian Farrar and Geoffrey Moore Discuss:-

Episode 026 - Jonathan Pfahl
Rockstar Mentoring.

To be successful, surround yourself with success!

I created Rockstar Group in 2007 with a vision. I wanted to give entrepreneurs and business owners the same benefits that I’d received from having a top mentor by their side to guide them through the business world, open doors for them and help them build wealth.

Having been mentored myself, and used it to grow a significant business and income of my own, I knew the power of surrounding yourself with successful people.

I knew that if I could assemble some of the UK’s top entrepreneurs, then I could help hundreds, maybe even thousands of UK business owners to reach their goals.

Fast-forward to today, and Rockstar has now helped start or grow over 8,500 businesses in pretty much every sector you can imagine. We even have our own Hubs in Central London, where we run our mentoring sessions and events, our own App, (link to rbw.com), legal team and investment platform to further fund the “Rockstar Businesses” within our growing client base.

We have some of the UK’s (and globally) most well known and respected entrepreneurs as our mentors and structure all of our mentoring around achieving tangible financial results for our clients.

Ian and Jonathan Discuss:-

  • Mentoring
  • Founding the company
  • Pivoting the company

Episode 025 - John Williams
Screw Work Break Free: How to Launch Your Own Money-Making Idea in 30 Days.

Bestselling author, Ideas Lab founder and career coach John Williams believes that the traditional 9-5 job model is outdated and is no longer the safest form of employment, and he has devoted nearly a decade to coaching people, wanting to start their own business, community project or enterprise, in the best way to craft a business from conception to launch, and beyond.
First, using his quick 3-step technique you'll find a killer business idea and then you'll follow John's tried-and-tested 30-programme to launch it as quickly as possible – with minimal risk, expenditure and time. In fact, John encourages you not to spend a penny, or do anything drastic, like quit your job, until you've made traction with your business, because his method is designed to develop first as a side project until you're ready to go bigger – a bit like Mark Zuckerberg developing the first version of Facebook while he was studying for his finals.

Drawing on ground breaking research, approaches and case studies that range from Silicon Valley enterprises to non-profit organisations, including ETSY, Air B'n'B, Facebook and Mashable, in Screw Work Break Free John provides crucial insights into corporate cultures, both good and bad, and offers a blueprint for establishing and launching a successful business.
John's first book Screw Work Let's Play: How to do what you love & get paid for it was a UK bestseller, recommended by the Sunday Times, and now in Screw Work Break Free he offers a radically different approach to business management and entrepreneurial thinking than most business books, as it is designed to help you quickly find a viable business idea and then walks you through the steps to launching it in 30-days.

Episode 016 - Lisa Spencer-Arnell

What's LOVE got to do with Leadership

How many magnificent leaders do you know?
Lisa's mission is to see far more of them & to change the energy from fear and surviving to love, compassion & trust. Imagine what it would be like if you loved going to work every day, if your team loved working for you, if your clients loved doing business with you, if your audiences/participants/people loved being connected to/led by you?
Imagine the possibilities and the extra-ordinary results available to you. People leading with more Courage, Compassion & Spirit is what gets Lisa out of bed every day.

Ian and Lisa Spencer-Arnell discuss:-

  • Multiple Braining – aligning your 3 brains for success – head, heart & gut
  • What's love got to do with Leadership? (are you leading from fear or love & compassion) Fear kills creativity, motivation, engagement, possibilities, relationships, results, profit & has people be in survival mode.
  • What's it like to meet you? - you're having an impact all of the time whether you're conscious of it or not. What impact do you intend to have and what is the impact that is felt by others? How closely matched are the two? How does it feel to be around you? Do you know?

The Ultimate Triathlon - Climb, Row, Cycle.

On 1st February 2014, James became the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world.

Seven years prior to this, he was recovering from a serious motorcycle accident that left him with broken legs as well as a severely broken and dislocated ankle. The prognosis was that he was likely to suffer a permanent walking impairment and would certainly not be able to continue the active physical lifestyle he had enjoyed up to that point.

James has continued pushing boundaries and in 2015 attempted to row 4,000 miles across the Indian Ocean with his Epileptic rowing partner. Their aim was to prove that despite having Epilepsy or a disability there is no barrier to pursuing ones goals. Two hundred and fifty miles offshore James’ rowing partner sustained a head injury resulting in a full-scale ocean rescue that was global news. James found himself clinging to a rope ladder on the side of a 100,000-ton crude oil tanker as he climbed to safety in storm force winds.

James has raised tens of thousands of pounds for his chosen charities as he has climbed, rowed, and cycled his way around the world!

James is also a keen supporter of Scouting and is a Scouting Ambassador.

Ian and James Ketchell discuss:-

  • Rowing the Atlantic - how to break it down
  • Climbing Everest - Keeping your head
  • Cycling around the world, speaking at schools & meeting people en route
  • Obtaining Sponsorship from Nandos
  • His new rowing around Britain project #gbrow
  • The new book 'Ultimate Triathlon'
